Every taco fan knows that every good taco owes its flavor to a good taco seasoning mix. Well, the recipe that I’m about to share with you guys today makes one mean taco seasoning. This Grandma-approved taco seasoning spice mix is absurdly good, only takes two minutes to make, and it’s absolutely jam packed full of flavor thanks to a brilliant mix of herbs and spices. All of these things combine to make one tasty recipe that will very quickly become your go-to taco seasoning when making any of our other great taco recipes that require seasoning (such as this excellent ground beef taco salad recipe).
One Savory Mix of Herbs & Spices
Considering how straightforward it is to make this taco seasoning spice mix, I thought I would instead go over everything that’s included in this recipe to highlight why each ingredient has been chosen and what they add to the mix. So without further ado…
Garlic & Onion Powder – I’m lumping the garlic and onion powder together here because they’re such a classic culinary spice combination that’s highly regarded for the immense amount of flavor that it provides to many, many dishes. As both garlic and onion belong to the allium family of vegetables, they each share many similar beneficial health properties as well, such as helping to prevent diseases like cancer according to one study. (1)
Chili Powder & Red Pepper Flakes – Just as I paired the garlic and onion powders together, I’m going to do the same with the chili powder and red pepper flakes. The reason being? They both contain the active component capsaicin, which is primarily responsible for giving them their spicy flavor and their rather potent health benefits. Capsaicin contains some extraordinary anti-inflammatory properties which is great as we now know that chronic inflammation is at the root of nearly every type of disease. (2)
Ground Cumin – Along with the above two ingredients containing capsaicin, this recipe also adds some ground cumin into the mix for a bit of added spiciness. Cumin has been found to be quite a heart healthy spice, and some studies have even noted its usefulness as part of a diet aimed at weight loss — such as the keto diet. One particular study found that cumin was able to improve several biomarkers in overweight or obese women, such as their blood lipid and cholesterol levels. (3)
Dried Oregano & Paprika – Yet another pairing that I’m lumping together, dried oregano and paprika both help to round out the taco seasoning mix by adding their own uniquely distinctive flavors to the recipe. Beyond just adding more taste to your tacos, culinary herbs and spices like oregano and paprika (and everything listed above!) are widely renowned for their incredible health benefits. They’ve been used for culinary and medicinal purposes for centuries due to their high antioxidant content and cancer prevention properties. (4)
Simply take all of the above ingredients, along with a bit of sea salt and black pepper, and mix them together in a small bowl. Take this mixture and add it into a jar or an airtight container until you’re ready to enjoy a deliciously spicy meal.
