Keto jicama french fries make for a perfect keto-friendly substitute to regular french fries because they offer a nearly identical texture with one key difference: a far lower carb count. It’s an excellent alternative and very easy to make too.

How to Make Keto Jicama French Fries

There are a variety of ways to make low carb french fries but these jicama french fries have become a favorite of mine because they get perfectly crispy and crunchy. I almost can’t believe these are low carb!

  • Preheat the oven. Preheat your oven to 425℉. While preheating the oven, prepare your baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  • Prepare the jicama. Peel the jicama and cut into fries.
  • Blanch the fries. Add well-salted water to a large pot and bring to a boil. Once it comes to a rolling boil, let the jicama blanch for about 10 minutes.
  • Drain. Drain the fries well. Use a strainer and then transfer to a bowl with a paper towel.
  • Combine the ingredients. Add the jicama fries, olive oil, lime juice, garlic powder, paprika, and chili powder to a bowl.
  • Season. Season to taste with salt. Toss thoroughly until each piece is well coated.
  • Prepare for baking. Arrange the fries in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-35 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  • Serve. Serve the fries warm with your favorite keto condiments.

What Exactly is a Jicama?

If you’ve never heard of jicama, don’t worry, it’s definitely one of the more uncommon ways of making keto fries, as I mentioned earlier.

Jicama (also commonly referred to as either a Mexican yam or Mexican turnip) is a thick root vegetable with a brown skin and white fleshy interior, kind of like a potato. One of the biggest differences that separates jicama from potatoes though is the fact that jicamas contain far fewer carbs.

Interestingly enough, it’s only the root of the jicama plant that’s actually edible. The seeds are particularly toxic and are used to develop poisons that kill insects and fish.

Jicama is most commonly used in Mexican cuisine, where it’s a popular ingredient used in everything from salads to soups. It’s quite a versatile veggie indeed that can be eaten either raw or cooked.

For our purposes however, it’s the fact that jicama is indeed so similar to potatoes that makes them an ideal keto substitute for french fries!

Other Keto French Fry Alternatives

Jicama fries are just one of many different ways that you can make keto-friendly french fries. In the event that you can’t get your hands on jicama, you can just as easily use any of the following options to make your keto fries:

  • Rutabaga fries
  • Parsnip fries
  • Avocado fries
  • Zucchini fries
  • Eggplant fries

How to Store Jicama French Fries

One of the biggest differences that I’ve noticed between regular french fries and jicama french fries is just how much longer jicama fries will stay good for.

As long as you’re keeping them stored in an airtight container in the fridge, these jicama fries will keep for 3-4 days.

However, compared to french fries, you’ll find that jicama fries taste just as good after a few days as when they’re fresh out of the oven. On the other hand, I find that you can never quite get the same texture again when reheating regular french fries.

  • 1 pound jicama, peeled and cut into fries 
  • 1 tbsp olive oil 
  • 1 tbsp lime juice 
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp chili powder 
  • salt to taste


  1. Preheat oven to 425°F. 
  2. Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil, and blanch the jicama fries for 10 minutes.
  3. Drain well. 
  4. Add the fries, olive oil, lime juice, garlic powder, paprika and chili powder to a bowl. 
  5. Season to taste with salt. 
  6. Toss to coat.  
  7. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 
  8. Arrange the fries in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. 
  9. Bake in preheated oven for 25-35 minutes or until golden and crispy.
