Sugar-Free Chocolate Chip Ingredients

Considering how simple this sugar-free chocolate chip recipe is to prepare, I thought it would be a good idea to focus on the “why” behind each of the ingredients included. Since there are only three of them, it should be fairly obvious that they all serve a key purpose.

Cocoa Butter – This ingredient is used to give your chocolate chips their hold and texture, as cocoa butter is responsible for adding that decadent silky feel that chocolate chips are known for. And since cocoa butter is made from real cocoa beans, it also contains all of the same health benefits.

It’s a rich source of healthy fatty acids, antioxidants, and it’s also been shown to help lower inflammation. The phytocompounds found in cocoa butter are particularly beneficial for your skin health, and they may even help to prevent premature skin aging. (1)

Liquid Stevia – This ingredient is added in order to give your sugar-free chocolate chips a little bit of sweetness. This is needed as cocoa butter and cocoa powder by themselves can taste slightly bitter. Stevia is chosen in particular because it’s a zero calorie alternative to sugar that is a much healthier alternative compared to other artificial sweetener options.

Since it contains no calories, and therefore zero carbs, it’s perfect for including in keto recipes like this. Studies have also demonstrated that Stevia could potentially be used as a promising tool to help prevent and reduce obesity due to the lower energy intake involved with its consumption. (2)

Cocoa Powder or Cacao Powder – You’re free to choose either of these two options when making these keto chocolate chips, but I personally prefer to use raw organic cacao powder. It’s the most pure form of chocolate that you can consume, and while cocoa powder is still a healthy option, I prefer my ingredients to be as minimally processed as possible.

Otherwise, both powder options provide many of the same great health benefits. They each contain compounds known as methylxanthines that provide benefits for everything from your oral health, to lowering your risk for cardiovascular diseases, to even helping to prevent cognitive decline as you age. With the ingredient explanations out of the way, to actually make the keto chocolate chips all you’ll need to do is first melt your cocoa butter, and then add in the other two ingredients.

Take your mixture and store it in the fridge for about two hours.

Once the mixture has finished setting, you can go ahead and chop it into small chocolate chunks to add to your next baking recipe.

  1. This is wonderful idea and I really want to make it work but I want to know if I can use a different sweetener?

    • You definitely could. I would keep it to a liquid sweetener though so the consistency stays smooth and doesn’t get grainy.
